The Golden Globes red carpet was back with a vengeance in 2023 after a telecast blackout and celebrity no-show last year.
In 2021, The Los Angeles Times exposed the lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organisation that presents the awards, revealing that there were no black members in its ranks.

That prompted NBC to drop the 2022 telecast and many actors to boycott the awards ceremony.
But the stars flocked back to the (grey) carpet this year, taking the opportunity to once again glam up and get creative.
And, as per usual, there were highlights and lowlights, stunners and shockers, and a frenzied online audience ready to hand out bouquets of adoration and brickbats of ridicule.
Here’s our rundown of the most talked-about looks on this year’s red carpet.
Vibe: Grecian Gucci goddess.
Jenna Ortega.

FilmMagicVerdict: Ortega’s gown divided opinion. Some loved it, others thought it was a little off, with its exaggerated sleeves and criss-cross bodice. Fans of Ortega’s Netflix show Wednesday were likely expecting her to keep the goth girl vibe going with her dress choice, but this wasn’t it.
Vibe: Elegant ballerina goes parachuting.
Selena Gomez.

Getty ImagesVerdict: While the main part of this dress – a draped velvet column gown – gave off classic Hollywood vibes, the puffy purple sleeves were an odd choice. Not a hit online, with many suggesting Gomez could go parachuting with those exaggerated balloon sleeves.
Vibe: Pretty in pink.
Margot Robbie.

Getty ImagesVerdict: Robbie’s pretty, classic Chanel dress made many of the online best-dressed lists for this year’s Golden Globes fashion watchers. Totally safe, but utterly sweet.
Vibe: Apricot delight.
Seth Rogen.

/
WireImageVerdict: With so many men playing it safe on the Hollywood red carpet, Seth Rogen’s pastel ensemble was a bold choice. And somehow, just somehow, he pulls it off. We think?
Vibe: Electric ladyland.
Viola Davis.

/
Getty ImagesVerdict: Just stunning. Davis moved away from the two colour trends of the night – gothic black or pastel pink – opting for a dazzling electric blue that highlighted all her best features.
Vibe: Drowning in ruffles.
Michelle Williams.

/
Getty ImagesVerdict: While there’s nothing wrong with a good ruffle, this dress goes a bit overboard – and as a result it looks overly busy and a tad dated. There’s just a bit too much going on. 80s, anyone?
Vibe: Rose between the thorns.
Eddie Redmayne.
Credit: Matt Winkelmeyer
/
FilmMagicVerdict: In every way, Redmayne’s tailored dark suit was standard – except for that one not-so-little detail on the lapel. While the idea of a flower lapel is cool, this one is a little bit too …. much? Points for trying, though.
Vibe: I’ve been working on my abs for the past six months. See?
Lily James.
Credit: Matt Winkelmeyer
/
FilmMagicVerdict: Fill in that mid-section and this could almost be a great dress. Like Ortega and Anya Taylor-Joy (see below), James had clearly read some sort of pre-Globes memo about exposing your midsection, but we’re kinda wishing that memo had gotten lost in the mail. Love the colour, though.
Vibe: I’m edgy and I don’t care what you think.
Emma D’Arcy.

/
Getty ImagesVerdict: The House of the Dragon star took on the gothic mantle that Jenna Ortega had cast aside, wearing this odd assortment of boxy clothes, blue gloves and quirky makeup. Fans of avant-garde fashion loved it. Others scratched their heads in bewilderment.
Vibe: Flimsy and fabulous.
Jessica Chastain.

Getty ImagesVerdict: This almost transparent gown could have gone so, so wrong. But on the luminous Jessica Chastain, it works. She looks stunning and nails it every time.
Vibe: Witch priestess meets Dracula’s daughter.
Lisa Marie Presley

/
NBC via Getty ImagesVerdict: We think Lisa Marie might have thought she was auditioning for the next season of Wednesday, and that’s all we’re going to say about this.
Vibe: You shall go to the prom.
Britt Lower.
Credit: Jon Kopaloff
/
Getty ImagesVerdict: It seems that Britt Lower got stuck in some kind of time warp and was accidentally beamed back to 1984.
Vibe: Lemon fizzle.
Anya Taylor-Joy.
Credit: Daniele Venturelli
/
WireImageVerdict: She’s one of the most in-demand actresses of the moment but this outfit is bland, so basic, and not super-flattering. Disappointing, but points for the metallic gold nails.
Vibe: Frocking fabulous.
Billy Porter.
Credit: Amy Sussman
/
Getty ImagesVerdict: You can always rely on Billy Porter to bring the glamour, the silliness and the frivolity to any red carpet. He has fun with fashion, and we’re here for it.
Vibe: Pumpkin spice.
Andrew Garfield.
Credit: Matt Winkelmeyer
/
FilmMagicVerdict: The orange and black combo is giving off Halloween pumpkin party vibes instead of Golden Globes style, but Garfield wins points for thinking outside the black tux box.
Vibe: Gothic grandma.
Jamie Lee Curtis.
Credit: Frazer Harrison
/
WireImageVerdict: More spooky Halloween vibes with this dramatic caped number which looks a little like it was made out of an old lace tablecloth.
Vibe: Classic all the way.
Monica Barbaro.
Credit: Kevin Mazur
/
Getty ImagesVerdict: Now this is how we do it! Classic, elegant and Audrey Hepburn-ish, Barbaro combines a classic bustier gown with a bold hue and takes out the red (or make that grey) carpet award for traditional Hollywood style.
Vibe: Viva Las Vegas.
Heidi Klum.
Credit: Matt Winkelmeyer
/
FilmMagicVerdict: Klum is very good at coming up with bonkers Halloween outfits but perhaps not so good at doing Golden Globes glam. This is a bit more Vegas trash and treasure than Hollywood chic.
Vibe: Bold and beautiful.
Letitia Wright.
Credit: Amy Sussman
/
Getty ImagesVerdict: On many of this year’s best dressed lists, Wright took a simple column gown, added a bold print and make it all look utterly sophisticated. Perfection.
Vibe: Dull disaster.
Elizabeth Debicki.
Credit: Kevork Djansezian/NBC
/
NBC via Getty ImagesVerdict: Debicki’s Dior gown is poorly fitted, and let’s face it, plain boring. We’re terrified it’s going to fall down around her waist and leave her looking red-faced on the red carpet.
