When Frank Lampard was sacked by Everton with the club in deep relegation trouble, there was an obvious candidate.
And that man was Sean Dyche, with talkSPORT understanding that after talks with several other contenders, the former Burnley boss will take over at Goodison Park.
4 Dyche enjoyed great success at Burnley
Marcelo Bielsa, Sam Allardyce and others were also considered for the role, but finally, the Everton board are ready to bring Dyche back to the Premier League.
The 51-year-old was the top-flight’s longest serving manager until the Clarets sacked him last year and were then relegated.
But just how good is Dyche and what have former players and pundits said?
Despite being in management for 12 years, Dyche has only managed two teams, Burnley and Watford.
The former Chesterfield player started his managerial career at Vicarage Road in the Championship and was in charge of the Hornets for one full season in which they finished 11th.
Burnley then appointed him in 2012 and he remained at Turf Moor until 2022.
4 Dyche is a hero at Turf Moor but has a huge job at Everton
Overall, Dyche managed 425 Burnley games in the Championship, Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
But it’s the Premier League record that will interest Everton fans as they fight to stay in the top-flight.
The Toffees are currently in the relegation zone and will face a financial nightmare if they go down, given they are paying for a new stadium and have a massive wage bill.
So Dyche’s task is simple – he must keep Everton in the Premier League, and luckily, that is something he is very good at.
Dyche managed six full Premier League seasons and most of a seventh.
Burnley recorded 72 wins, 68 draws and 118 losses in the top-flight under Dyche.
The Clarets were promoted from the Championship in the 2013/14 season and were immediately relegated the year after.
However, after a successful 2015/16 campaign, Dyche’s side returned and stayed in the top-flight for six consecutive seasons.
In that time, Dyche managed to finish seventh and tenth with an unfancied Burnley side.
So, he has a record for keeping teams in the league, and given that this Everton side has a lot of talented players, you would think he would be able to save the Toffees.
Full Premier League seasons: Six
Premier League games: 258
Premier League wins: 72
Premier League draws: 68
Premier League relegations: One
Highest Premier League finish: Seventh
Lowest Premier League finish: 19th
4 Dyche was full of praise for Everton when he was first linked with the job
Dyche is known for playing direct football but also getting the most out of every single player at his disposal.
And due to that and the lack of a budget, Gary Neville believes that Dyche’s time at Burnley deserves a huge amount of praise.
Speaking to Sky Sports after he was sacked, he said: “Well done to Sean Dyche for doing one of the great managerial jobs in Premier League history.
“He had a bantamweight budget and yet punched hard against the heavyweights for years.”
And another thing Everton fans should do is look at what former players have said about the 51-year-old.
Ben Mee, who played under Dyche for his whole tenure and is now at Brentford, said in 2020: “I think the club has changed so much in the seven years he’s been here.
“You can see the difference when you come to the training ground and when you come to the stadium.
“The quality in the group has improved through the years, it’s been exciting times since he’s come here.
“I think all the fans are enjoying the ride that we’re on, so I hope we can improve and keep this club going forward even more.”
4 Mee was a top defender at Turf Moor for Dyche
Plus, ex-Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon was also a huge fan of the former Burnley gaffer.
He said: “He has been very honest with me.
“He said, ‘Aaron, I want you to come here, enjoy your football, play with a smile on your face and work hard’. And that’s what I’ve tried to do.”
And it’s that honesty and integrity which is exactly what Everton need.
In every way, this appointment makes perfect sense and Dyche should be the man to save the Toffees.
