Phillies vs. Astros game preview

This streak is a classic baseball post-season game, as it sees the big favorite in the Astros against a team that gained momentum in the Phillies at just the right time. Houston were considered one of the favorites to win the World Series after the All-Star break and were very hot as they won seven of their last ten regular season games and won all seven postseason games.

The Astros also ended the regular season by winning two of their three series against the Phillies. Game 1 starting players have yet to be announced, but it looks like Justin Verlander will start for the Astros, while Zach Wheeler or Aaron Nola will head for Philadelphia.

In two postseason starts, Verlander leads 1-0 with a 6.30 ERA in 10.0 innings. He surrendered seven earned runs and recorded 14 strikeouts.

Wheeler has been incredible for the Phillies this postseason, posting a 1.78 ERA in four starts. He also recorded 25 strikeouts, 10 total hits and five earned runs in 25.1 innings.

Nola was also strong, posting a 2-1 record with a 3.12 ERA. In 17.1 innings, he recorded 18 strikeouts and gave up just six earned runs.

At the plate, the Astros were led by Julius Gurriel, who hit .367 with two home runs and three RBIs. Jeremy Peña also has a big postseason, batting .303 with three home runs and five RBIs. Alex Bregman also hit .333 really well with two home runs and seven RBIs. Jordan Alvarez was inconsistent, hitting just .241, but still added two home runs and eight team RBIs.

The Phillies were led by Bryce Harper with a monster postseason. Harper is batting .419 with five home runs and 11 RBIs this postseason. Although it was a holiday or a famine, Rhys Hoskins also hit five home runs and 11 RBIs but hit just .182. Kyle Schwarber wasn’t much more consistent, batting .200 but adding three home runs and six RBIs.

This streak can be defined by many things, but as usual in the postseason, pitching rotation management can be the biggest. While the Astros are big favorites, the Phillies’ serve and strength should make this a long and interesting World Series.
