Cristiano Ronaldo could leave Manchester United in the January transfer window after scoring just two goals in 12 appearances for the Premier League club this season

Ally McCoist struggled to find a reason why Napoli would sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in the January transfer window.

Ronaldo's Old Trafford future looks bleak after he refused to come on during United's 2-0 win against Tottenham at Old Trafford earlier this month. He was subsequently dropped by manager Erik ten Hag for the 2-2 away draw against Chelsea on Saturday.

The Portugal international, 37, has scored just two goals in 12 games for United this season and many fans believe Napoli is the perfect place for him to reignite his glittering career. The Italians are top of Serie A and have reached the last 16 of the Champions League.

According to The Sun, Ronaldo is open to joining Napoli in January. The veteran forward has a fine record in Italy, scoring 101 goals in 134 appearances for Juventus during a three-year spell to help them win five trophies - including two Serie A titles.

Yet Scotland legend McCoist can't see the move happening. "I don't know why Napoli would take him," McCoist told talkSPORT. "I genuinely don't know why. I've seen enough of Napoli this season to say that they're on top of their game and they had another brilliant result at the weekend beating Roma 1-0 away from home.

"They're flying on all fronts. I might be wrong and he might go there. I don't see what he would bring to Napoli at this moment in time."

Napoli are currently three points clear of champions AC Milan in Serie A, winning nine of their first 11 league games this term. In terms of Europe, they've achieved some memorable results - including a 4-1 home win against Liverpool.

Joining Napoli would allow Ronaldo to extend his lead as the Champions League's record scorer. He's hit 140 goals, although long-term rival Lionel Messi is just 11 behind his tally after scoring twice in Paris Saint-Germain's 7-2 win against Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday.

Napoli also have an outside chance of winning this season's tournament. Although few will be backing them to do so, they can't be discounted considering their good form. Ronaldo has won five European Cups and needs another to match Paco Gento's record.

A source told The Sun Chelsea were interested in Ronaldo in the summer, but he's "no longer on their radar". It's also claimed Arsenal and Newcastle "realise the quality he would bring in helping them to achieve their ambitions" but have reservations over signing him.

There is a worry Ronaldo's arrival could upset the balance at either club. Arsenal are enjoying a stellar campaign - sitting two points clear of champions Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. Newcastle are also doing well in fourth.

It's claimed Italy is Ronaldo's "most likely destination" and Napoli are interested in signing him to boost their Serie A and Champions League hopes. Yet wages are said to be a concern, as the United star is currently taking home more than £500,000-a-week.
